About the Fire Department
The Baca Grande Fire Department (BGVFD) is a division of the Baca Grande Property Owners Association located near the town of Crestone, Colorado. The Fire Department is all-volunteer with 27 active members. We are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
 Equipment
Our fire trucks include a mini-pumper, a 2000 gallon tender and a compressed air foam truck. We also have an equipment truck and a chase vehicle.
Grants
We frequently apply for and receive grants for equipment and training. We obtained 20 new sets of bunker gear from FEMA, a thermal imaging camera from the Department of Justice, and many smaller items from these agencies and the Rural Fire Assistance and Volunteer Fire Assistance grants through the Colorado State Forest Service and the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The El Pomar Foundation has also supported us through small equipment grants in recent years. We are grateful for all the help!
Associations
The BGVFD is a member of the National Fire Protection Association, the San Luis Valley Fire Fighters Association, the International Association of Fire Chiefs and Women in the Fire Service. We are a part of the San Luis Valley Annual Operating Plan (
 AOP) which outlines a valley-wide mutual aid agreement for the various fire fighting agencies in our area – including State, federal and local agencies. Many of our volunteers also work as professional fire fighters in the warmer months – as cooperators with the Colorado State Forest Service. The experience they bring back to our community is rich!
The BGVFD is not a tax-supported fire district; funding comes from the POA, donations, grants and fund raising events. You can also mail donations to the fire department at the address given below.
